INCOHERING SOUNDS
For this creative project, made as part of university course-work, I recorded sounds that seemed to have an omnipresence—sounds that are so ubiquitous that more often than not, we do not consciously realise we are listening to them most, if not all, the time. These sounds are also representative of an urban environment, and are produced by machines. To be precise, I picked three sounds—
the sound of a fan running at high speed in a closed room,
the sound of a motor of a fridge that’s not working properly,
and the sounds one hears travelling in the Delhi Metro.
The next step was to record the recorded sounds, record the second recording, record the third recording and so on and so forth till, I assumed, we would have a sonic object in front of us that would be completely indiscernible and unrecognisable, both as a stand-alone object and as in comparison to the “original” or first recording.
